Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Salisbury Foundation Trust is a regional centre for complex, following, or simultaneously with, resection for cancer or for individuals with a .

Breast reconstruction can be performed at the same time as a mastectomy (removal of the breast tissue), as an immediate reconstruction, or after mastectomy as a delayed procedure for breast cancer. Radiotherapy causes skin to become tighter and less elastic and may affect your choice of reconstruction, particularly with implant based reconstruction.

Those patients who have a genetic mutation such as the BRCA gene may opt for risk reducing mastectomies and immediate reconstruction. It may also be carried out for a congenital disorder such as Poland’s syndrome. Other plastic surgery procedures may include Breast Reconstruction, gynecomastia surgery, tuberous breast, breast asymmetry and breast implants (some procedures may require prior CCG funding approval).

It is important to remember that breast reconstruction is only an option and you may prefer to use an external protheses. Please speak to your breast care nurses who will be able to advise.
